Tajani “The many crises are dowels of a single mosaic of instability. Target safety expenditure at 5% of GDP in the next decade”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The NATO summit in Ankara marked a key step towards the future of the Atlantic Alliance, reiterated unity. He did so in a particularly complex historical fringe, crossed by a deep instability of the international framework among the most critical of the last decades, even against the forecasts of those who wanted to see only the individual positions of the eve, losing sight of the whole”. Antonio Tajani, Vice-Premier and Minister of Foreign Affairs, said this during the hearing in the joint foreign commissions and defense of Chamber and Senate. “As I have always said, the friendship that binds us to the United States goes beyond the single president, goes beyond the single post on social media. These are values, people, businesses, historical and deep ties,” added Tajani.

“The war of aggression of Russia to Ukraine continues without a truce, indiscriminately striking, inflicting unspeakable suffering the civilian population, tensions have also been turned on in the Gulf with the repercussions throughout the Middle East, in the Mediterranean area enlarged to Lebanon, the threats of the Houthi. We are not faced with separate crises, they are all dowels of a single mosaic of instability that starts from sub-Saharan Africa through the Mediterranean and Middle East and arrives to the European continent – Tajani continued – a geopolitical framework in which the diversification of supply routes and access to raw materials have become strategic imperatives that the crisis of the Strait of Hormuz has made even more urgent”.

“The Ankara summit has reached its main goal, that is to reaffirm the unity and cohesion of the Alliance, only one united West is able to face the challenges we face. We have always placed this goal at the centre of our action, strong of a conviction: Europe cannot do without the United States and the United States cannot do without the European Union. A union that must be increasingly aware of its strength, its importance – added Tajani –, a Europe capable of offering guarantees of peace, security for over 450 million citizens.” For the Foreign Minister “the credibility of our collective defence depends on our ability to realize the European pillar of the Alliance. We changed the paradigm, passing from defense expenses to security costs.”.

“We have brought security costs to 2.8% of GDP, we intend to confirm the achievement of 5% in the next decade, respecting the constraints of public finance and of course the prerogatives of Parliament. Italy wants to be the protagonist of the strengthening of the European pillar of NATO, our military are carriers of peace in all strategic areas that concern us closely, from sub-Saharan Africa to the Horn of Africa, the Balkans and Lebanon to the Red Sea. We have a great security industry, with top-class skills, our companies have all the papers in order to help strengthen the security of our country and the entire Atlantic Alliance,” added Tajani. “In Ankara industrial agreements were announced between allies for more than 50 billion dollars and Italy, will participate in many of these projects, with positive effects on the entire industrial sector of large groups, small and medium-sized enterprises,” he explained.

“Last week I participated in the Paris Summit of the Voluntary Coalition, in the name of the government I also joined the new coalition against ballistic missiles. It is a key initiative, an important first step in building a European defence and Italy, is among the countries promoting this project, along with the main partners of the European Union to the UK and Ukraine. added Tajani -. The aim is to set up technology and industrial skills to develop a more effective European response in the anti- missile defence sector, firstly, regarding Ukraine, and then in perspective for other situations.”.
