ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella took part in Andria at the ceremony in memory of the victims of the railway accident on the Andria-Corato line, in which ten years ago, on 12 July 2016, 23 people lost their lives and many others were injured. On his arrival in Piazza dei Bersaglieri, Mattarella laid a crown of flowers in front of the memorial stone. At 11.05, the time of the collision of the two trains, a minute of silence was observed; then 23 bells and the reading of the names of the victims. During the ceremony were the mayor of Andria, Giovanna Bruno, and the President of the Puglia Region, Antonio De Caro. At the end of institutional interventions, the Head of State went to the square entitled to the victims of the accident, where a memorial statue was installed.
DECARO “FERITA CHE NON SI RIMARGINERA’ MAI”
“Today here in Andria the sun shines strong. It is the same sun burning on the rubble of the railway disaster of 12 July ten years ago, in the countryside between Andria and Corato. At 11:05 on a hot summer day, a boat broke the Serene skies and broke the lives of 23 people, destroying their families forever. A deep wound that will never remain and that has forever marked the history of Puglia and Puglia. Ten years have passed since that day, but the atrocity of that disaster will remain imprinted in our eyes and in our hearts. Because a broken life is forever. And while all around us, albeit struggling, has desperately pursued the attempt to return to normal, to you, family of the victims, no one will return your children, your sisters, your brothers, your mothers and your fathers.” The president of the Puglia Region, Antonio Decaro said so.
