UniCamillus protagonist in Petra project: more safety in plasma use

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – UniCamillus University is among the protagonists of the PETRA research project (Educational Strategic Programme for Appropriate Transfusion of Plasma), funded by the National Blood Center in the 2024-2025 call and started operationally in 2026. The project, coordinated by the ASST Valle Olona in Varese as head of a national network of hospital companies, sees UniCamillus as the only academic partner.

The Medical University will play a central role in the definition and development of educational and educational paths aimed at health professionals. PETRA was born with the aim of systematically analyzing the use of plasma for clinical use in Italian hospitals in order to reduce its inappropriate use. Scientific studies show that sometimes these valuable resources are administered outside the recommendations provided by the Guidelines, where more targeted and safe therapeutic alternatives may be used.

“In Italy the availability of plasma and especially derived plasma is limited and the health system depends partly on foreign supply. It is therefore essential to ensure a rigorous and appropriate use of this strategic hemocomponent, which, while being safe, is not devoid of potential risks to the patient”, explains Professor Matteo Bolcato, Associate of Legal Medicine, Professor UniCamillus and scientific manager of the project together with Dr. Ivo Beverina of the transfusional service of ASST Valle Olona.

Together with partners, to respond to this need for clinical and safety appropriateness, UniCamillus will guide the training section of the project and will translate scientific evidence into a training package for prescribed physicians, which will include operational tools such as address lines, information materials, webinars and continuous updating activities.

“With the PETRA project, the University puts its teaching expertise at the service of a crucial national challenge – says Gianni Profita, Rector UniCamillus – Forming doctors to the appropriate use of plasma is not only a clinical choice, but an ethical duty to protect a limited resource, indispensable also for the production of life-saving plasma drugs. Our goal is to ensure maximum patient safety and strengthen the sustainability of the entire healthcare system.”.

Future developments and the national network Starting from the data collected in clinical centers, the project aims to define indicators of appropriateness of use of plasma, developing methods of monitoring and structure a collection of data of centers.

This initiative is part of an international context characterized by increasing attention to patient safety, personalized medicine and the “One Health” approach, in perfect line with the recent European standards on human products (SoHO). In this scenario, transfusion appropriateness is a crucial node not only in the clinical, but also organizational and medical-legal.

The multicentric nature with high impact of the project is guaranteed by the involvement, as well as of UniCamillus and the ASST Olona Valley, of important national hospitals such as the ASST Fatebenefratelli Sacco, the Company USL of Bologna, the Policlinico of Bari and the Hospitaller Company Villa Sofia-Cervello of Palermo.
