times Square is one of the symbols of the American New Year. He descends from One Times Square a few seconds before midnight, in front of a crowd waiting for hours behind the transennes, and for more than a century he has been serving to celebrate the advancement of a number, making it a television image that everyone in the world has well known. In 2026, that scene will be reproduced outside its natural calendar: Friday, July 3, on the eve of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence, the sphere will descend eight times.
The event is called Giving 4th Broadcast Benefit Show and is organized by America250 and One Times Square. The mechanism of the New Year countdown will be used to follow the arrival of midnight in the different time zones of the United States and their territories. The first descent is scheduled at 10 am, New York time, for Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands. Then the countdown will continue towards Puerto Rico and the continental United States, until the main descent of 23:59 in Times Square, which will mark the beginning of July 4 on the eastern coast. The last one is scheduled the next morning, at 7:00, for the American Samoa.
The most important thing, for those in New York, is that it will not be a square event. There will be no public areas from which to watch the ceremony in the streets or squares of Times Square, and One Times Square has specified that from the outside will not be visible either the countdown or confetti or fireworks. The event is in fact conceived as a television broadcast and streaming, with a limited number of free tickets for access inside the building.
In the next two days, One Times Square will open to the public, with free tickets and limited availability, the Times Square Skywalk on the 19th floor. On July 4th and 5th visitors will be able to climb the 360-degree panoramic walkway, read the text of the Declaration of Independence on a glass wall and write a message on a coriander that will then be launched during the next New Year. The America250 national program also includes a concert at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, conducted by Queen Latifah, with Chris Stapleton and Smashing Pumpkins among the artists announced.
The project is part of Giving 4th, the initiative with which America250 wants to bind on 4 July 2026 also to a large national fundraiser. The choice of Times Square is quite obvious: it is one of the few American places that already work as a shared image, recognizable even by those who have never been there. This is why the event says something about how the United States is building their anniversary: less local celebration and more synchronized story, designed to cross time zones, screens and different cities using a tradition born to measure the last seconds of the year.
