Italy leads the UN debate on peace and rule of law

“There cannot be sustainable development without peace. And there can be no lasting peace without inclusive development. Italy firmly believes in this approach, based on the rule of law, human rights, the fight against corruption and effective multilateralism. ”

With these words, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Edmondo Cirielli spoke at the 7th Global Conference on the Objective of Sustainable Development number 16, dedicated to strengthening the institutions and the rule of law, organized by Italy along with the Department for Economic and Social Affairs of the UN (Undesa) and the International Organization of Development Law (Idlo) at the UN Headquarters in New York.

At the end of the work, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations Giorgio Marrapodi renewed Italy’s commitment to globally promote peace, justice and solid institutions within the framework of Agenda 2030.

Many high-level interventions have enriched the debate, including those of the President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock, UNDP CEO Alexander De Croo and UN Deputy Secretary General Amina Mohammed.

The contributions of the participants in the Conference, which was preceded this year by a dedicated Civil Society Forum, focused on the importance of strengthening the collaboration between institutions, private sector and civil society, recognizing the value of protection and widening of civic participation spaces.

The main ideas and results that emerged in the Conference will be summed up in a final report, which Italy will present at the High Level Political Forum in July, another key appointment of the multilateral agenda.
