ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In view of the vote the debate focused on the possible numbers and alliances. Francesco Saverio Romano, in an interview at Italpress, reverses the order of speech and starts from a clear thesis, valid right as on the left: winning the elections is not enough, it is important to be able to rule the next day.

Policy discusses numbers and alliances as if governing was an addition. It’s not. Governing is a responsibility towards the country, and the words with which it presents itself to the Italians count as the programs”.
– What do you think, in particular? To Roberto Vannacci?
“I think in words that we all know. The problem is that a party called to govern Italy represents all Italians, including those that Vannacci has put out of the fence of normality or Italianity. Anyone who sits at the table of a majority cannot have the same dignity as a part of the citizens who should serve.
– Is it just a matter of words, or even of a political line?
“There is above all foreign policy, and this is where the distance becomes undeniable. The positions of the general on Russia and Putin are known, and contradict in a frontal manner the Atlantic and European position that this government has consistently held, from support to Ukraine to fidelity to the Alliance. A coalition does not hold if two opposing foreign policies live within it. The first European Council would be based on NATO’s first summit, to break it.”.
– Vannacci brings votes. Wouldn’t it be worth keeping him in the coalition?
“Vannacci does not ask to enter a coalition, asks to re-found it in his own image, under the banner of a “real right” identity. But a right that to pursue its most extreme fringe expels its moderate, popular, liberal and European soul, does not gain strength, loses balance. It loses the part that makes her able to govern and speak to the real country, what asks for roads, health, work and sustainable bills, not slogans from talk show”. – But you criticize the other field with the same hardness. Is that the same reasoning? “Go with the same reasoning, reversed. Green and Left Alliance brings legitimate ideas and a respectable tradition, I recognize it. But his fundamental positions remain incompatible with a government that wants to last.”.
– How incompatible?
“On the defence, Avs is opposed to the increase in military spending and has warned the choice to militarily support Ukraine, in the name of a pacifism that questions Atlantic solidarity. On the economy demands the ambition of transformation against what calls the disaster of pragmatism, and makes of the minimum wage and the dispute of the market its flag. These are positions that directly collide with the line of Matteo Renzi, a convinced Atlantest, supporter of Kiev, reformist and liberal in economics. It is not a nuance between allies, it is a system fracture.”.
– Fratoianni says not to veto. Isn’t it an opening?

“It is the point that too many pretend not to see. Winning the election alone means nothing. In fact, winning without being able to rule is worse than losing, because it illudes citizens and blocks institutions, preparing for the next crisis. The story of the Second Republic is full of majorities born to beat the opponent and death for his own incoherence. They were those, more than the defeats, to wear the trust of the Italians in politics”. – And in all this what is the role of We Moderates? “A coalition is held together if it has a keel, a center of gravity that prevents it from overthrowing to the first wave. In the centre is the moderate and reformer space, of popular and European tradition, which we represent. We’re not the raft of the coalition, we’re the keel. We are the part that allows you to keep the course when the wind rises and mediate when the positions stiffen.”.
– In conclusion?
“The real question is not with those who are trained to win, but with those who can really rule the next day. Vannacci’s words and Avs’ positions, each in their field, give the same exact answer. We can perhaps sum up some votes, we cannot build a government. And a serious country, in the end, chooses who knows how to govern it, not who knows how to shout louder than others.”.
