ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The team of experts of the National Institute for Infectious Diseases “Lazzaro Spallanzani” IRCCS, engaged in recent days in Kinshasa for the Ebola emergency, returned to Italy at the end of an operational mission carried out in agreement with the Department of Civil Protection. The field activity, read in a note, focused on “direct technical coordination with Congolese health institutions with the aim of contributing to the strengthening of the response in an evolutionary phase of the epidemic”. In the course of the mission, the team “has worked closely with the main national referents, in particular at the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) and the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), participating in the operational comparison on surveillance, management of epidemiological data and organization of activities on the territory”. In addition, “the aspects of clinical and diagnostic pathways in the 17th Ebola epidemic recorded in the country have been deepened.” At the same time, “the delivery of medicines and medical materials, accompanied by indications on their use in relation to the available evidence and local operational needs”.
The visit to INRB laboratories allowed “a direct comparison of diagnostic capabilities and sequencing activities, central elements in the management of high-risk pathogens”. The mission also allowed “to start a dialogue on possible future collaborations, both in the management of infectious emergencies and in training and strengthening of local skills”. The Institute therefore expressed “a heartfelt thanks to the Department of Civil Protection, the national institutions involved and the Italian Embassy in Kinshasa for the coordination and support that made possible the realization of the mission”.
