Pharmaceutical, Vella “Delete innovation but people have to stay in the center”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The advances of biomedicine and the development of innovative drugs are changing the prevention and natural history of numerous diseases, but the challenge remains to transform scientific progress into a truly accessible benefit to patients. It is what emerged during the conference “The value of pharmaceutical innovation: personal, ethical, social and economic”, which took place at the Sala degli Atti Parlamentari del Senato della Repubblica. “In the last twenty years the advances of biomedicine and the development of innovative drugs have changed the prevention and natural history of numerous diseases. The development of new therapies and their availability for the National Health Service involve important investments, but innovation without access is not innovation. The challenge is to build models that can always keep people at the centre,” said Stefano Vella, professor of the University of Rome “Tor Vergata” and scientific coordinator of the conference. During the meeting, which brought together institutions, scientific communities, health professionals, patient associations and industry, it was stressed that innovation not only represents scientific and technological progress, but also a personal, ethical, social and economic value. Among the themes addressed in the debate are the new oncological drugs, anti-infectious therapies, the role of vaccines in prevention, the evolution of personalized medicine and strategies to ensure equity in access to care and sustainability of the National Health Service. Comparison has emerged the need to strengthen models and tools capable of combining innovation, sustainability and right to health, enhancing the contribution of institutions, scientific community, patient and industry associations to transform scientific progress into a concrete value for citizens and the healthcare system.
