Israel, Tajani “Superata linea rossa, indignato da Ben Gvir”

MILAN (ITALPRESS) – “A red line has been exceeded for us.” The Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, said this in an interview with Avvenire, commenting on the videos showing the treatment of prisoners by Israeli Minister Ben Gvir. Tajani is said to be “indignated” and emphasizes that, although Israel has the right to defend itself, it does not have that of “humiliating prisoners” or questioning the dignity of unarmed persons. The Italian Government, which has already summoned the Ambassador, demands the guarantee of physical safety and the immediate repatriation of all the civilians stopped. The owner of the Farnesina warns that these episodes emphasize the isolation of Israel, even in the friends countries. While not wishing to interfere in Israeli electoral choices, Tajani hopes that the next government will avoid abuse and provocation against civilians, including Christians in the Holy Land. On the international front, it reaffirms the need for a common European foreign and defence policy to act effectively in Ukraine and the Middle East, while maintaining the Atlantic Alliance as the hub of Western defence.

Passing to the internal themes, Tajani relaunches Forza Italia’s proposal on “Ius Italiae”: citizenship linked to a ten-year school cycle successfully completed. “We want to reward those who study and are worthy,” explains the Minister, distinguishing this line from “buonism” or “fiery face” and stressing that the proposal should not be used to divide the majority. With regard to the events of Modena, Tajani condemns all forms of racism and violence, highlighting however a problem of radicalization linked to hate languages in some areas of Islam in Italy. However, he warns against doing generalizations: criminal responsibility is individual and one cannot blame an entire religious belief. On the economic level, Tajani declares itself “absolutely contrary” to every unilateral budgetary deviation, defining it as a “ catastrophic error” that would prevent the spread. The aim is to deal with Brussels for energy and defence expenditure to be excluded from the Stability Pact. Finally, on the theme of the end of life, the Minister invokes a national rule to fill the current legislative vacuum and to uniform the decisions of the Regions, placing as a priority the protection of life until the last moment.
