Car on the crowd in Modena, Piantedosi “Not a terrorist, but wrong to talk about the isolated gesture of a madman”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “He is the son of Moroccan immigrants, born in Bergamo, Italian citizen, graduated. It is a subject that has been diagnosed with a schizoid personality disorder and this makes it more complex to frame the story. He manifested resentment and dissatisfaction for his working and social condition. In an e-mail addressed to his university he gave sentences against Christian bastards and other blasphemous expressions, and then apologized. It could have been animated by a hatred connected to resentment for having felt that he had suffered discrimination.” The Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi says this in an interview with the Newspaper, talking about the 31-year-old of Moroccan origins who, last Saturday, invested seven people in Modena.

“In the state of the acts – he continues – he did not give signals of structured Islamist radicalization, not being belonging to fundamentalist propaganda networks. From the search and analysis of phones, at the moment, there would be no evidence of the classic profile of the terrorist planning violent actions. But the exact picture we will have when the polluters will complete their work and, in any case, all this cannot lead to liquidate the attack as the gesture of an isolated crowd. However, we are talking about a deliberate aggression against unarmed civilians, of absolute gravity, which poses profound questions about social discomfort, integration and the identity paths of some second generations. It would be a mistake to store everything with a simple or reassuring explanation.”.

Piantedosi emphasizes that “the threat of lone wolves is today one of the most insidious. We talk about individuals who often radicalize themselves in solitude, consume online propaganda and strike without an organized structure behind them. This makes it much more difficult to prevent every single gesture.”.

For the minister “every episode of this gravity imposes a serious reflection on the instruments available to the State. This government has already intervened decisively through recent security decrees, strengthening the instruments of prevention, control and expulsion towards socially dangerous subjects and accelerating the procedures concerning those who represent a risk for public safety. Today Italy has a much stronger regulatory framework than the past. But security is not guaranteed once and for all: it is necessary to continuously update the investigative tools, strengthen information coordination and increase the ability to intercept in time every risk signal, without underestimating anything”.
