ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “We must promote the alliance between health and family, as between school and family: we should really talk about the alliance of a whole community with the family, an alliance focused on care.” This is the central passage of the intervention of the Minister for the Family, Christmas and Equal Opportunities, Eugenia Maria Roccella, guest this morning of the meeting “Family and fragility”, which took place at the University Polyclinic Agostino Gemelli IRCCS on the occasion of the International Day of the Family.
The initiative, as part of the project “We don’t leave anyone alone”, was organized by the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, by the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute of Higher Studies and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and represented a moment of reflection on the role of the family in the treatment paths, especially when life is crossed by the disease, vulnerability and the need for a daily accompaniment.
The work was opened by Professor Giuseppe Fioroni, Vice President of the Giuseppe Toniolo Institute of Higher Studies, Dr. Daniele Piacentini, General Director of the University Polyclinic Foundation Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, and Professor Alessandro Sgambato, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart. During the interventions, the central role of the family in care, care report and daily support for patients was reiterated.
Mgr. Claudio Giuliodori, General Ecclesiastical Assistant of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, and Dr. Adriano Bordignon, National President of the Forum of Family Associations, who placed the theme within a broader perspective: spiritual, educational, social and institutional.
In fact, fragility is not only about those who are sick, but it questions the quality of ties, the ability of institutions to support those who support and the way a community chooses to stand next to its most exposed members.
“Celebrating the International Family Day here is the best way – said Ministra Roccella –. In fact, we must promote the alliance between health and family, as between school and family: in reality we should talk about the alliance of an entire community with the family, an alliance focused on care. For a long time in Italy there has been a lack of family policy: people have been considered by categories, scorping individuals from the context, first of all from the family context. Our government has put the family in the centre through the action of all ministries. We have not only considered individuals through a classification of vulnerabilities, but also the family, because this can help rebuild the cohesion of communities. We must preserve the Italian exception that has been disintegrating because the culture of post-modernity has tended to weaken the family, increasing vulnerability, fragility, loneliness of people.”.
“The International Day of the Family cannot last in a celebratory event or in a memory exercise. It must become, rather, an assumption of responsibility – recalled the Vice President of Toniolo Giuseppe Fioroni -. A responsibility that challenges each of us – in the profession, in work, in daily choices – because without the family every human, social and care journey becomes more fragile, more complex, more difficult to sustain.”.
Particularly attended the round table dedicated to the experiences and good practices of the Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli IRCCS, with the interventions of Professor Daniela Chieffo, Head of Clinical Psychology Unit, Dr. Roberta Galluzzi, Director of Human Resources and Organization, Dr. Francesca Giansante, Coordinator of the Social Service, and Dr. Maria Rosa Russo, Board of Directors. Moment of strong emotional involvement was the testimony of a family who shared their path of care and closeness lived within the Polyclinic. During the morning, also, the volunteers of Tennis&Friends In Corsia, with the technical masters of FITP, visited the pediatric departments bringing moments of play, sport and closeness to small patients and their families. In particular, the Roccella ministra met the small patients, families, doctors and health professionals of the pediatric Oncology department.
