Meloni “The free way to reform the Trentino-Alto Adige Statute is a historic milestone”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “The definitive approval in Parliament of the reform of the Trentino-Alto Adige Statute is a historic milestone. It is the crowning of a path that this government has decided to start from its settlement, in order to respect the solemn commitment assumed before the Chambers on the occasion of the programmatic declarations of the beginning sent”. This is what the President of the Council says, Giorgia Meloni, in an editorial published in the newspapers South Tyrol, L’Adige, Dolomiten. “The change in Title V of the Constitution of 2001 had created transversal and superimposed competences with the State, generating a conflict that undermined the standards themselves of the most special of the autonomy provided by our order, that of Trentino-Alto Adige and all its linguistic communities. The Government took on the political and institutional responsibility of identifying a solution to this dossier, which has been dragging itself for over twenty-five years and that no one had decided to deal with constancy and determination. We did so, identifying a synthesis that guarantees a clearer institutional structure and puts balance and responsibility at the centre, in a context of national cohesion.”.

“I remember with regret the prejudices that in the past – he continues – weighed on me and on the Brothers of Italy and that, for too long, have pushed in many to look at us with suspicion, especially in Trentino and South Tyrol. I believe, however, that the confidence that has been answered in us at the beginning of this legislation, with the vote of abstention expressed in Parliament by Südtiroler Volkspartei, has not been betrayed and that the approval of the reform that the Statute of autonomy has dissolved, once and for all, every doubt on our seriousness. It is a result that we did not reach alone, but together with the territory. Together with the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano, the Region, the Joint Commissions, the Provincial Councils and the Regional Council. Thanks to a profitable and productive method of work, which has allowed to constantly collect the needs of the territory and all its linguistic communities. The Italian Government, in confirmation of the best relations of friendship and collaboration with Austria, also wanted to confirm the usual communication of courtesy to the Authorities of Vienna on the process of parliamentary reform almost ended in Italy”.

“Today – he points out – we can count on a stronger and more transparent relationship of special autonomy in the Italian constitutional system. With this reform, approved in record time and with a large parliamentary majority, we have secured the areas of exercise of the competences of the Autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano and the Region and we aim to close once and for all the season of litigations triggered by the constitutional reform of 2001. We succeeded in what so many before us had failed, and we are proud of it. We have freed autonomy from uncertainties and will continue to work to strengthen the trust between the State and Trentino-Alto Adige, enhancing those pillars on which it has grown and has consolidated over time the economic and social fabric of this territory: community, enterprise, work. Trentino and South Tyrol are virtuous examples of an autonomy that works, in a framework of unity and national cohesion. Two indissoluble principles, which these territories have always embodied and which we will continue to protect and value,” concludes Meloni.
