ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “In the very first hours after the most devastating shock, there was a generous mobilization of the army and firefighters. The dedication of many men in uniform and their express strength have saved lives, cared for, contributed to instill confidence and courage. A sense of brotherhood that they also expressed so many young people who came to help in the countries and in the countryside of a territory that the most even knew. Our country preserves formidable moral resources of humanity and the sense of unity that can express in the most difficult, precious social and civil heritage. It happened in Friuli, it had already happened before elsewhere, and this generous story has often been reproposed”. This was said by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, speaking to the extraordinary Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia for the 50th anniversary of the earthquake of Friuli.
“Who has experienced that pain, many present who have direct memory of those days of terror and despair, who has taken part as a child or already as an adult to the long tiring path of reconstruction, knows well that we are not making memory of any event, but of an event that has marked the history of these territories and of these communities and the whole of Italy,” he added.
“In an unpublished context and in a situation of deep and difficult, a new mode of relationship between public apparatuses, local representations and social forces was born. That work has left Italy a precious network, premise for the constitution of Italian Civil Protection, model appreciated everywhere. Not only a national service with tools and professionalism, progressively higher, but an operational network with local authorities and volunteering with the aim also of prevention as a separate task from emergency relief activities”, concluded Mattarella.
