Polycistic ovary syndrome, at the San Camillo Roma new endocrinologic ambulatory

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – A paradigm shift in the diagnosis and treatment of the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): opens the multidisciplinary endocrinological and gynecological clinic dedicated to pathology, the first with access with ticket in the South Center, with an approach that integrates the traditional gynecological vision only to put the tear syndrome. The multidisciplinary clinic, active within the Endocrinology Operational Unit and coordinated by Roberto Baldelli, is the first centre in Rome to offer a diagnostic-therapeutic path for the PCOS in public regime, accessible with the only payment of the prescription ticket for suspect diagnosis. The Policistic Ovary Syndrome is one of the most widespread conditions in the female population in fertile age, with an estimated prevalence between 10% and 15%. It has several signs and symptoms, some of the more purely gynecological nature – such as amenorrhea –, but it hides underlying causes often related to hormonal and metabolic problems, for which an endocrinological evaluation is necessary. Despite this, it is still frequently interpreted and managed as a predominantly gynecological disorder. The new outpatient was born precisely to overcome this approach, thanks to the collaboration between different professional figures, focusing the patient with a complete assignment – from ultrasound diagnostics, to therapies to nutrition – able to manage all manifestations of pathology in the short and long term. “According to the latest scientific evidence and EGOI-PCOS recommendations, PCOS is in most cases an endocrine-metabolic condition, in which the ovary represents one of the target organs and not the primary cause of the disorder,” says Vittorio Unfer, President of the Scientific Association EGOI-PCOS. “ At the base of the syndrome there is often a condition of insulin-resistance and hyperinsulinemia, present in a significant proportion of patients, although not included among the diagnostic criteria of current guidelines. An element that contributes to the development of the main clinical manifestations, including irregularities of the cycle, hyperandrogenism and endocrine-metabolic alterations,” explains Roberto Baldelli, Director of the UOSD of Endocrinology. “The clinic dedicated to polycystic ovary syndrome is important because it allows a structured and multidisciplinary takeover of patients, integrating the gynecological and endocrinological skills. In this way it is possible to guarantee a more accurate diagnosis, a complete evaluation of reproductive and metabolic-hormonal aspects and a targeted treatment on the causes of pathology, improving the effectiveness of care and the quality of life of patients”, says Maria Giovanna Salerno, Director of the UOC of Ostetricia and Gynaecology of the San Camillo-Forlanini Hospitaller Company. The clinical model adopted by the centre is based on these assumptions, in line with the EGOI-PCOS classification, which provides a priority-oriented framework for endocrine-metabolic aspects and a causal therapeutic approach. The path of care pays particular attention to the interventions on lifestyle, with a focus on nutrition and physical activity, flanked – when necessary – by pharmacological or nutraceutical support aimed at improving the insulinic sensitivity. The objective is to intervene on the mechanisms underlying the syndrome and not exclusively on the symptoms, favoring an overall improvement of reproductive and endocrine-metabolic health. The inauguration of the clinic, located at the third floor of the Antonini Pavilion, was held in the presence of Roberto Baldelli, Director of the UOSD of Endocrinology of the Sanillo Camillo-Forlanini Hospitaller Company, Maria Giovanna Salerno, Director of the Hospitaller Companyella UOC di Ostetricia e Ginecology dell’Impresa Ospedaliera San Camillo-Forlanini, di Vittorio Unfer, President of the Scientific Association EGOI-PCOS, and General Director Angelo Aliquò. -photo press office EGOI –(ITALPRESS).
