Beware of Trump at the gala dinner, it is safety debate

The annual White House correspondent dinner at the Washington Hilton, an event that is organized every year, designed to celebrate the press and to which the American President also participates was interrupted by a shooting: an attack on Trump. A armed man opened fire in the lobby of the hotel and although he was immediately stopped by Secret Service agents, the shots heard from the room threw guests into chaos and terror.

Donald Trump, evacuated with his wife without bringing back wounds, then thanked the first lady Melania Trump “for her courage and patience”. The man who opened the fire, according to the president, “is a sick person. It is always shocking when something like this happens – he added – I heard noise and thought it was the fall of a tray. First Lady got it. We were taken away in a flash, without much time to think.” then praised the courage of the agents and reassured on the conditions of the wounded policeman, defined “in a good mood”. The tycoon however defined the Washington Hilton “not a particularly safe building”, recalling the memory of the previous one of 1981, when Ronald Reagan was injured right in front of the same hotel.

The episode, which could have turned into a national tragedy, rekindles the debate on the security of institutional events in the United States.

According to the deputy director of the Secret Service, Matthew Quinn, the suspect “has tried to provoke a national tragedy”, but has been neutralized thanks to a “multi-tier” security system that, although effective, still needs further countermeasures. The only wounded is a Secret Service agent, already discharged from the hospital: decisive, the authorities reported, the anti-projectile jacket that avoided much more serious consequences.

If, on the one hand, the attack was quickly neutralized, on the other, it remains the fact that a armed man managed to approach an event of such relevance, attended by political representatives, journalists and public personalities. The Secret Service defends the effectiveness of its intervention, but admits the need to further strengthen the protocols. An inevitable reflection in a country marked by increasing political polarization and a long wake of violence linked to firearms.

The only wounded, a Secret Service agent, has already been discharged from the hospital. The authorities stress that the equipment has avoided the worst, but this is not enough to turn off the controversies on the preventive effectiveness of the device.

The arrested man was identified as Cole Thomas Allen, 31, originally from Torrance, California. According to the first information, he had no criminal record or was monitored by law enforcement. Graduated in mechanical engineering at Caltech in 2017 and with a master in computer science obtained in 2025, Allen had worked as an engineer and independent developer of video games, as well as performing part-time teaching activities. The federal authorities believe that it is a “solo light”. The FBI is preparing to search for a house connected to man to clarify motive and possible ties. According to investigative sources, in the sight of the attacker there would have been generically “government officials”, although it is not yet clear whether the president was the direct goal.

The news has aroused immediate reactions from the international community. Several world leaders condemned the incident, reasserting that “political violence has no place in a democracy”. Messages of solidarity arrived from Canada, Mexico, India, Japan and Israel, with a unanimous choir in underlining the gravity of the episode and the relief for the safety of the president.

“This incident will not divert me from winning the war in Iran.” He said President Trump, intervened after the incident: “I want to live because I want to make this country great. When you have an impact, they target you. When you have not, they leave you alone.” The president then recalled the attack immediately during the election campaign, when he was wounded in an ear. “It’s not the first time in the last couple of years that Republicans are attacked or killed. In the light of this evening, I ask the Americans to resolve the differences peacefully. It applies to Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Progressives.” Who asked him if he was worried about the threats to his life, the president answered: “It’s a dangerous profession.” Then he added: “No country is immune to political violence.”.
