CATANIA (ITALPRESS) – Sicily is nominated to become a national reference point in innovation applied to emergency health. On the occasion of the 3rd National Conference “Prospects of the Emergency System – Artificial Intelligence in the Sanitary Emergency” which took place in the Congress Centre of the Hospitaller Company for the Cannizzaro Emergency was signed the “Carta di Catania” for ethical, conscious and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence in Italian emergency and emergency services. The document was signed at this stage by the “SEUS 118” (promotor of the initiative), “Company Zero Piedmont” and “ARES 118 Lazio”. Subsequently during another event that will take place in Rome will also be shared by other emergency-emergency systems in Italy.
“With the Charter of Catania – says the president of SEUS 118, Riccardo Castro – we stress that every use of Artificial Intelligence must be accompanied by adequate training of operators, clarity on the capabilities and limits of the system and awareness of ethical implications. As part of the health emergency system, it may be an added value, representing a tool to support human decision-making, but, in fact, it will not have to replace the responsibility, competence and judgement of health workers.”.
The subscribers of the Charter of Catania will create a National IA Committee for Sanitary Emergency with the aim to share experiences, best-practice, accidents and cases of use, define common technical and operational guidelines and promote interoperability protocols, safety standards and shared training.
“Artificial Intelligence – underlines Salvatore Giuffrida, general manager of Cannizzaro – will give a valid support during the emergency-emergency activities, however with the Catania Charter we reaffirm among other things that the final choices will always turn to doctors and health professionals.” For Massimo D’Angelo, general manager of Azienda Zero Piemonte “the application of artificial intelligence is fundamental according to network logic and experimentation models. The Charter of Catania is therefore a very important initiative.”.
And Narciso Mostarda, general manager of ARES 118 Lazio emphasizes that “The Artificial Intelligence is a support but must also be a model to reorganize all emergency-emergency services. We are here to set up a table starting from Sicily to the North of Italy”.
During the conference, moderated by Niccolò Di Raimondo, other representatives of AREU Lombardia, AREU Sardegna, SUEM Veneto, AST Valle D’Aosta and AUSL Modena Emilia-Romagna took part. Also present are the scientific societies SISMAX, SIIET, COES Italia, AAROI EMAC and the Italian Association for Artificial Intelligence. The directors of the NUE 112 of Tuscany, Piedmont, Marche-Umbria and Calabria also took part.
