Asse Italia-Grecia-Cipro-Malta to prevent a new migration crisis

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – On the edge of the informal meeting of members of the European Council in Agia Napa, the President of Cyprus and the Heads of Government of Greece, Italy and Malta met to discuss possible initiatives to be implemented in a coordinated and coherent manner, with the aim of preventing a migration crisis similar to that of 2015, as recalled in the conclusions of the European Council of 19 March 2026.

While reaffirming the importance of ongoing efforts to quickly reach a diplomatic solution to the conflict, the four leaders stressed the need to continue working closely with the partners of the region to ensure assistance and support for the affected populations. As Member States located at the external borders of the European Union and more exposed to potential uncontrolled migration flows, they also examined a number of possible measures to ensure, if necessary and in full compliance with international law, effective security and management of EU external borders.

Reaffirming the importance of a common European approach to maximizing the effectiveness of their national responses to a possible significant increase in migratory flows linked to the Middle East conflict, the leaders of Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Malta have instructed their competent ministers for internal affairs and the migration of continuing close coordination, even considering, in cooperation with the European Commission, the most suitable ways to integrate national efforts within the framework of the competences and initiatives of the European Union.
