The budget is a dead man and you are injured after a shootout on Saturday night at a Chick-fil-A restaurant in New Jersey. The attack took place around 20:45, on Route 22 in Union, a town about ten minutes from Newark, a very busy area especially on Saturday night, also thanks to the presence of numerous commercial activities. According to local authorities, all wounded persons would not be in danger of life, while the victim had not yet been identified.
The first reconstructions are based mainly on the testimonies of the shooting and on an online video. A film taken by a dashcam shows in fact the steps immediately after the shooting, with several people fleeing the restaurant and at least one individual with his face covered that seems to hold a weapon. Among the witnesses is Alex Lopez, husband of a local employee, who told the New York Times how the woman called him a few minutes before 20:45 in a panic state, initially convinced that it was an incident related to fryers. Only after a few moments he would have realized it was gunshots. The employee managed to get out of the back of the club, losing his senses immediately after, but without bringing back injuries.
In an audio released by CBS News, instead, a 911 operator signals the presence of more injured, including a person affected by the face and at least two to the legs, as well as a witness without conscience – it is not clear whether it was the employee of before. Around midnight, Union County Attorney’s Office officials transported a body away from the shooting site, while law enforcement continued to isolate the area and collect evidence.
The authorities excluded, at least in the early stages, a motive linked to terrorism. Mikie Sherrill, Governor of New Jersey, expressed closeness to the victims, while the county attorney’s office spoke of an action that “does not seem casual”: it was probably designed to achieve a goal, but it is not clear the motive and not even the shooter. Federal prosecutor Robert Frazer also confirmed that there are no links to terrorist ideologies. There’s no arrest at the moment.
