ROMA (ITALPRESS) – According to the results of 2025, presented in the Brasca Hall of the Policlinico Gemelli, in Rome, the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC) of the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS confirms to be a solid reality showing its growth in the Italian oncological panorama. Over 64 thousand patients treated last year, up 6-7%.
During the meeting, in addition to the results, the activities of the Comprehensive Cancer Center have been presented, which, according to the numbers for which about 1 patient out of 5 comes from outside Lazio, confirms its presence among the main hospital realities of the country in the treatment and research on tumors. 22.4% of assisted patients come from outside Region, both from North and South Italy.
To the presentation, held by Professor Giampaolo Tortora, director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC), by Daniele Piacentini, General Director of the Political Foundation Gemelli IRCCS and Professor Antonio Gasbarrini, Scientific Director of the Political Foundation Gemelli IRCCS, also took part in the President of the Lazio Region Francesco Rocca, the President of the Policlinico Foundation Gemelli Daniele Cuore Franco and the Rector of Elena Cattolica.
“With the design and opening of this Centre in 2019 we wanted to create a ‘House Care’, a place where the most advanced technology joins the best professional skills and coexists with human warmth and the beauty of the environment. We want to take care of each of the over 60 thousand people who rely on us every year,” said Piacentini.
“The results of the Comprehensive Cancer Center tell a real transformation: we are beginning to rewrite the natural history of even more unfavourable prognosis tumors, such as pancreas, lungs, ovary and some brain neoplasms such as glioblastoma. Thanks to innovative therapies and intense phase 1, 2 and 3 clinical trial activities, we offer patients an ever more early access to the future of medicine. This evolution also concerns onco-emathology, where advanced cell therapies such as CAR-T are opening scenarios until recently unthinkable, while requiring high expertise in risk management and toxicity,” said Gasbarrini.
Growth is homogeneous in all areas of oncological activity in the centre. One of the distinguishing elements of the CCC of Gemelli is represented by the intense activity of the 24 interdisciplinary oncologic groups (Tumor Board), which gather one or even twice a week. This organizational model allows you to collectively discuss clinical cases and ensure patients with ever more personalized and appropriate diagnostic-therapeutic paths. The quality of assistance is accompanied by a strong scientific vocation. Clinical activity proceeds in close synergy with research.
“At present there are over 350 clinical trials active in the oncological field, of which about 300 profits and 50 no profits, a data that testifies the excellence of research conducted at the center. Oncology is also one of the six strategic thematic areas of the IRCCS Gemini Foundation,” said Tortora.
In 2025 there were 64.435 cancer patients assisted in the different areas of CCC, equal to more than 60% of the entire activity of the Gemelli Polyclinic. Among the main indicators of activity: 55.713 infusional antitumoral therapies, 21.515 oncological hospitalizations, 19.458 oncological surgery, 4.238 patients treated with radiotherapy, 737.228 outpatients and 18.720 first psycho-oncological interviews and evaluations.
“They are extraordinary results, the result of the great work and the clinical and scientific ability of the Gemelli – highlighted Rocca -. There is a desire to collaborate and continue to grow together.”.
For Rector Beccalli: “The Cancer Center is a project of excellence for the Catholic University because it is in full harmony with the Policlinico Gemelli and allows us to put in dialogue research and care with attention to the person and his dignity, making accessible to all the more advanced oncological care.”.
The president of the Daniele Franco Foundation also highlighted the “conjunction between care and research in the Cancer Center. This structure cares tens of thousands of people who have a very difficult moment of their lives and it is essential that this is done in the best possible way, but also with a focus on human relationships. I believe that for the Policlinico Gemelli this is one of the pillars of activity”.
