Ecce Homo by Antonello previewed the Senate, Giuli “We return to Italy a work of great value”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Ecce Homo of Antonello da Messina, purchased by the Italian State, was unveiled at Palazzo della Minerva, seat of the Library of the Senate, in the Chapter Room, in which it will be available free of charge from tomorrow March 27 and until April 7. “We are a network of institutions that at various degrees are concerned to return to the heritage and availability of Italian citizens a work of so great value,” said the Minister of Culture, Alessandro Giuli, after thanking ITA Airways. The minister then described the moment when Sotheby’s was shown the picture, recalling how he created “a silent climate of respect for something that has its uniqueness. A deeply felt respect in the face of a work that sums up our program as a ministry of culture.”.

“It is a painting lived – he explained – that brings within itself the power of the devotion of those who have possessed and even consumed it through their own devotion and inner motion of the soul. We decided to give a residence to this work of Antonello from Messina to L’Aquila, but at the same time he explained the intention “not to give him a fixed domicile to make him travel for a little family reunions with other similar paintings. We want this picture to represent our way of living culture as a civil mission, that is to show that for such a great value there is no fixed residence,” said Giuli.

Together with the Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli in the Senate for the ceremony inaugurates the exhibition of the Ecce Homo of Antonello from Messina, in the Capitol Hall of Palazzo della Minerva, the President of the Senate Ignazio LaRussia has defined the occasion “very important. Among other things, it is the first in the Ecce Homo series, which were then scattered. The will to reunite them, at least temporarily, that the minister has in mind, is sensational. Returning to look with an important eye the work of Antonello da Messina, not only makes the single work more accessible, but multiplies its importance, attention and usability. So it becomes an operation not only cultural, but also social, perhaps socio-economic, because it is not true that culture does not produce wealth. Culture, if it is well spent, produces first of all wealth of the spirit, but also material wealth as an effect as a side effect.”.
