The Permanent Representative of Italy at the United Nations, Ambassador Giorgio Marrapodi, spoke on 17 March at the General Assembly at the debate of the 70th Commission on the Status of Women (CSD), which this year focused on the promotion of justice, rights and full participation of all women and girls, as well as the strengthening of legal systems for the fight against discrimination and violence.
The Ambassador has enhanced Italy’s long-standing commitment and the interventions launched more recently by the Italian Government to consolidate the regulatory framework and counteract all forms of violence against women. In particular, Marrapodi stressed the unanimous approval in Parliament of the introduction of feministrative crime as an autonomous case, which took place on 25 November, on the occasion of the International Day for Contrast to Violence on Women.
During a very busy week of meetings between delegations and civil society organisations, Italy organized and co-sponsored numerous initiatives.
On 13 March, the conference was held on the counter to female genital mutilation, organized with UNFPA, UNICEF, Canada, Burkina Faso, Eritrea, Sweden to share and evaluate regulatory progress and good practices to protect the rights of women and girls. On Thursday, March 12, the Minister for the Family, Christmas and Equal Opportunities Eugenia Roccella took part in video message at the event “Protection of women and children: combating violence and exploitation in surrogacy”, organized with the Holy See, Paraguay and Turkey on the subject of surrogacy, its ethical and normative implications, in light of Italy’s commitment to protect human dignity and prevent any form of exploitation.
During the CSD, Italy also organized initiatives with UNIDO, on 11 March, on the promotion of the role of women and young people in the coffee industry, in particular in Africa; with FAO, on 12 March, to encourage female leadership and equal opportunities in the agri-food sector; with ACNUR and UN Women on support for women and girls in conflict situations; with IDLO on the specific issue of access to justice for women.
