Citizenship, CGIE: good extension to 2029 for the registration of children born abroad

The General Council of Italians in the East expresses satisfaction for the approval of the amendment to the decree “Milleproroghe” which postpones until 31 May 2029 the deadline for enrollment in the registers of children born abroad of Italian citizens by birth.

The measure, approved by the Chamber of Deputies, represents an important result for Italian communities in the world and welcomes a strong demand from the CGIE in recent months. Already in the June 2025 Plenary Assembly, the General Council had approved a specific agenda for the day to urge the Government and Parliament to intervene in order to prevent thousands of minors from risking their right to recognition of Italian citizenship for reasons related to time and administrative complexity.

This position was subsequently reiterated and strengthened by the CGIE Mainland America Commission in November 2025, in view of the particular criticisms recorded in that area, where the high number of consular practices and working times had aroused great concern among families.

The amendment allows parents Italian citizens to submit a declaration of will for the purchase of citizenship by children under the age of 31 May 2029, exceeding the previous term of 31 May 2026 provided for by transitional legislation. The measure relates in particular to those born abroad before 25 May 2025 who were still under 18 at the time of the entry into force of the new provisions, offering three additional years to conclude the consular procedures, and goes to complete the provision introduced by the Law of Budget 2026, which postpones to 36 months from the entry into force of the DDL 36/2025 the registration of children born abroad.

The extension to 2029 allows to guarantee a time frame for the completion of procedures, to protect the right of minors to the full recognition of their belonging to the national community and to relieve pressure on the consular offices, favoring a more orderly management of the practices.

This is a concrete result of a constant institutional work, carried out in the exclusive interest of our communities in the world, the result of a claim advanced by the CGIE and demonstrates the importance of the dialogue between representation of Italians abroad and national institutions.

The General Council of Italians in the Far East will continue to call for further structural interventions to make the system of recognition of citizenship more efficient and accessible, to protect the rights of the new generations of Italians in the world.
