A 36-year-old man, Mark Anderson, was arrested in New York on Wednesday in charge of being introduced to the Brooklyn prison by pretending to be an FBI agent to get the release of Luigi Mangione. Anderson, resident in Minnesota, claimed to have a court order authorizing the exit from Mangione prison, held in December 2024. According to the authorities, the request was immediately rejected by penitentiary agents, who found obvious inconsistencies in the documentation exhibited.
The attempt, in fact, appeared unbelievable from the beginning. Anderson only showed his Minnesota driver’s license as an alleged proof of belonging to the FBI and, during the confrontation with the staff of the facility, stated he had weapons in the backpack. Immediately afterwards, he would launch some papers to the agents. However, the search for his backpack did not lead to the discovery of firearms or offensive objects: inside it there were a barbecue fork and a circular cutter. Anderson was arrested on the spot, and now he has to respond to various charges including replacement of himself, for dealing with an FBI agent, and the threat to structure security.
Luigi Mangione is detained pending trial for the murder of Brian Thompson, managing director of the UnitedHealthcare health insurance company, killed by gunshots in 2024. The case attracted a lot of attention in the United States not only for the profile of the victim, but also for the reaction of a part of public opinion. After the arrest, Mangione received letters, photographs and offers of economic support for legal expenses, a phenomenon that authorities and different observers described as a form of romanticization of violence.
