Massolo “The liberation of Trentini example of collaboration between organs of the State and between Italy and USA”

ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The liberation of the compatriot Alberto Trentini “is definitely a success”, the result of a work of collaboration that involved all the bodies of the State but also the collaboration between Italy and the United States. It is the opinion of Ambassador Giampiero Massolo, former secretary general of the Farnesina, interviewed by the Italpress agency. “It is a success from the point of view of the work that involved all the bodies of the State, and therefore was an example of collaboration. It was (also) an example of collaboration between Italy and the United States: I must say, also recalling the words of Minister Tajani, that the collaboration with the Secretary of State Rubio, from this point of view, was decisive,” Massolo said.

On the situation in Venezuela, the ambassador noted that the country is heading towards a new phase. “We still don’t know where this phase will lead. The President of the United States has pointed to what remains of the regime, namely that, more than immediately attempting the road to new elections and a change, he thought to work with who was already there, with Vice-President Rodriguez, but has a very difficult task because he has to leverage an apparatus of the old regime that is still there. And not all are obviously favorable, also because it touches positions of preconstituted power, to turn page, to start a relationship with the Americans,” the diplomat said.

According to Massolo, there is also “an interesting application, by the President of the United States, of the magazine version of Monroe doctrine”: avoid, yes, that foreign powers enter the sphere of US influence, “but also work with those states” regarding resources. “It’s an interesting phase, nothing is yet really defined, everything can still happen, but the first steps seem encouraging,” the diplomat concluded.
