ROMA (ITALPRESS) – The Council of Ministers, on a proposal from President Giorgia Meloni and the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, approved a decree-law introducing urgent provisions for election and referendum consultations of the year 2026.
The measure intervenes to ensure the orderly conduct of the electoral returns scheduled for next year, optimizing organizational procedures and voting time. The rules meet the need to ensure the maximum participation of citizens and the efficiency of the administrative machine on the occasion of electoral and reporting deadlines.
The text provides for the extension of voting operations, establishing that for the consultations of the year 2026 the ballots remain open on Sunday, from 7 to 23 hours, and on Monday, from 7 to 15 hours.
This measure aims to facilitate the exercise of voting rights, reducing the risk of crowding at seats and ensuring a reasonable time for the influx of voters. The decree also regulates the mode of shortening of different types of consultations (so-called election day), in order to generate savings for public finance and limit the inconvenience for school activity in the plessi seat.
Finally, the allowances for the members of the Chamber Electoral Offices are updated and the procedures for the sharing of expenditure between the State and the local authorities concerned are governed.
