ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “Recurring the fiftieth anniversary of the Treaty of Osimo, signed, on the impetus of the spirit of the Helsinki Conference, in order to positively compose the tormented “ariatic question”, whose failure to resolve was inconsistent with the full deployment of bilateral relations. To it we owe the definitive attribution, with legal certainty, of Trieste to the Italian Republic and the resolution of the differences relative to the borders, ungrateful inheritance of the fascist war that had resulted in the loss of territories united to Italy at the end of the First World War and with the Treaty of Rapallo of November 1920. The good will of the parties, reflected in the agreement, has allowed to close in those areas one of the most bitter passages of the recent Italian history, transforming them, within a few years, from painful page to border the most open of Europe and, from place of bitter opposition, to place of cooperation, consolidated, later, from the common membership with Slovenia and Croatia to the European Union”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, says this on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Osimo.
“The path of reconciliation and broad collaboration with those countries is an example in the international community – he adds. Cross-border cooperation, as well as the recognition of the role and promotion of the respective linguistic minorities in the areas of historical settlement – a fundamental element of dialogue and joint development – has competition to reclaim the lacerts of already-centred hatred and has been able to help to heal lacerations, to promote well-being and stability for the respective communities. In this continent, I am aware of the principles of freedom, equality, democracy and respect for the rule of law.”.
For Mattarella “the Italian contribution to making the Balkans a land of peace is an impetus for the counterpositions and tensions still present in the area, leading to European stabilization and perspective for each of the regional partners. The horizon of peace and prosperity will be strengthened by the reunification of the Balkan countries, with Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, to the platform of values of the European Union”.
