Today the 70th anniversary of Italy’s entry to the United Nations took place on 14 December 1955. A goal of great value, which marks seventy years of active participation of our country in the multilateral system and UN action in favor of peace, international security, human rights and sustainable development.
In these 70 years Italy has played an important role in the life of the Organization, as demonstrated by the seven Italian mandates in the Security Council, participation in peacekeeping operations, human rights activities, gender issues, humanitarian assistance projects and support of UN agencies and programmes, a constant commitment that is renewed today under the impetus of the Italian Government and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The Permanent Representation of Italy has organized numerous and qualified initiatives to celebrate the 70th anniversary, including the Feast of the Republic on June 3 at the Glass Palace in the presence of over 500 guests, including over 200 Italian officials and officials working for the United Nations, the exhibition “Uniti nel vita, unite nel futuro” inaugurated on October 20 by Secretary General Guterres on the occasion of the concurrent celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the UN.
On 11 December at the ECOSOC hall a high-level meeting was held on the future of multilateralism and the United Nations organized by Italy together with the 16 countries entered the Organization in 1955, on which the commemorative stamp of 70 years printed and distributed by the United Nations was presented.
The celebrations of the 70th anniversary continued with the presentation of a book and an exhibition on 13 November on Italy’s participation in peacekeeping operations organized by the Military Office of Representation and with an event on 8 December in the General Assembly’s Palace to valorize the week of Italian cuisine, in view of both the candidacy, went to port successfully, of Italian cuisine to the inscription in the cultural heritage of UNESCO and of the discussions in the General Assembly Monday 15 December.
Thanks to the collaboration of the ANSA, the Permanent Representation in New York also organized a digital exhibition of historical images from the agency archive depicting some highlights of the seventy years of Italy at the United Nations.
