ROMA (ITALPRESS) – “There have been forty-five years since that dramatic 23 November 1980 in which violent seismic shocks struck Irpinia, Basilicata and some areas of Puglia, causing the death of about three thousand people, thousands of wounded and displaced, millions of citizens in need of help. The response to the catastrophe by the institutions and civil society, the many volunteers who, driven by a deep spirit of participation and solidarity, came to the aid of local people, was challenging and generous. A difficult page of our history remained imprinted in the collective memory, constant reminder of the need to adapt systems of monitoring and immediate reaction to the vulnerabilities to which parts of the Italian territory are exposed and at the same time spurred in search of adequate solutions in anti-seismic matter for a reconstruction that was also relaunch of internal areas of our country. The Republic commemorates its victims and joins the pain of family members.” This is what the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella says in a note.
