ROMA (ITALPRESS) – In 2024 there were 110 thousand people with HIV followed by the 167 Clinical centers of infectious diseases distributed on the national territory, mainly men and almost all in anti-retroviral therapy. Photography comes from the CARPHA3 project (characteristics of people living with HIV/AIDS in Italy). Upon its third edition, the project was funded by the Ministry of Health with the aim of providing real, up-to-date and comprehensive data on HIV prevalence in our country. 73% of the people followed are male, emerges from the project, 63% is older than 50 years and about 98% are in anti-retroviral therapy. 78% is also of Italian citizenship, 36% acquired infection through homosexual relationships and 35% through heterosexual relationships.
“The objectives proposed by UNAIDS for HIV infection control by 2025 are the so-called targets of the Continuum of Care (CoC) “95-95-95” (95% of diagnosed, 95% in therapy, 95% in suppressed viral charge) – explains Lucia Pugliese and Vincenza Regine of the Aids (CoA) Center of the Higher Institute of Health –. These percentages are not deusable from national HIV and AIDS surveillance systems that are unable to provide information on how many people in Italy live with HIV/AIDS and what their clinical, immunological, virological and behavioral characteristics are. In recent years the CoC was obtained through mathematical models based on the results of the previous national project CARPHA1 and CARPHA2 conducted in 2012 and 2014 and on the data of studies of Italian cohorts like ICONA. To fill this informational vacuum, the project was conducted on all Italian public centres, thanks to which a more reliable description of the characteristics of people living with HIV was obtained.”.
